Digital Safety Reflection

All 5 of the topics are important subjects to be aware of and to address by everyone who uses the internet. FUP/copyright issues, cyberbullying, textual harrassment & sexting, phishing and pharming, digital safety & privacy are all worth exposing students to because they are all issues they could be faced with at some point in time. The only portion I may have to modify and set very specific parameters to is the sexting portion because high school students are not always the most mature audience. However, it is still a topic that must be addressed.

To open the unit, I would have an anonymous box students could place questions or issues they would like addressed regarding internet use. I would have them watch Internet Safety by Common Sense Media. (“Internet Safety Tips for High School Kids | Common Sense Media,” n.d.) I would then like to take a personal approach with my students and have them evaluate their use and their classmates use of the internet. I would conduct a pre and post evaluation of their use. I would have them evaluate 3 of their friends use of the internet and give each other feedback about it. We would cover all the five topics and see if they feel they need to make any changes as to how they use the internet and what they make available to the public. I would also highlight some real problems teens have faced so they understand these problems can really happen to them.

Using Wiggio for this assignment was extremely beneficial for me. (“Wiggio - Makes it easy to work in groups.,” n.d.) With my schedule, as with everyone else's schedule, physically meeting can be challenging. Wiggio allows individuals to continue to work on their own time and make changes while continually seeing any changes other group members make. People are connected without being at a standstill. It is particularly beneficial when you do not personally know your group members because you are all only focused on the task at hand and need not worry about the socializing aspect and get directly to work. Wiggio is a valuable tool I am sure students will find beneficial as well, especially 9th grade students, who have problems getting rides to meet.

Overall, this digital safety project was informative as far as the topics were concerned and a valuable learning experience in utilizing another innovative digital tool like Wiggio.
